Hand harvested at our home vineyard by a team of volunteers on 4 March. Crushed and pressed same day as picking and cold settled for 3 days prior to a spontaneous ferment in stainless steel before finishing the final 20% of the ferment in barriques. 35% Matured in new D&J French oak and 65% in old French oak for a total of 10 months with weekly lees stirring.
Our entire Bella Luna yield in 2018 was 1130 kilograms and the influence of Bella Luna’s typical small berries have resulted in another concentrated, complex, yet elegant Chardonnay. The nose displays ethereal notes of honey dew melon, lime zest, marzipan, almond blossom and the classic Bella Luna wet stone minerality. The palate shows an exciting tension between fruit, texture and acidity. The small berries that result from the sites low vigor provide a mouth filling and velvety texture offset by green apple, grapefruit and leesy richness. Last but not least, we cannot ignore the acidity, which lingers so pleasantly, albeit not as pronounced as the acidity of the 2017 Bella Luna, it’s allure is undeniable, and coupled with the phenolic structure and mid palate weight of the 2018 Bella Luna, we are convinced this is another class Central Ranges Chardonnay that has a long life ahead of it.
