One of the three wines we made in the challenging 2020 vintage. This fruit came from one of the coolest sites in Orange- the Belmont Vineyard on the South side of Mt Canobolas. The fruit was a good price and being Merlot we thought it was a good opportunity to see if we could make a wine that works with the smoke and provides counter points (in the pursuit of balance) to the drying, savoury flavour spectrum that is typical of wines from 2020.
So how did we make it? The fruit was hand picked on Feb 28th and spent the night in the cool room prior to being destemmed into two, one tonne fermenters prior to a spontaneous ferment commencing. In order to keep extraction to a minimum, one of the fermenters was only punched down twice throughout it’s life and the other was punched down once daily. The wine was pressed off skins after nine days and was put down to one of our 750L casks where it remained for the following 6 months.
The wine was bottled without fining or filtration on October 22nd 2020.
The 2020 Merlot di Renzo is a wine of contrasts. The colour is translucent, vibrant purple. Aromatically it’s plush, and floral- showing violets and juicy black cherry. In the mouth, it displays generous black forest fruit, yet a taught and mineral texture that finishes with a distinctly savoury ending.
Truly unique Merlot, that speaks of time and place
