WINEMAKING NOTES
Made with some lovely fruit from Cargo Road Wines grown by James Sweetapple from 14-year-old vines growing on some very rock red basalt rite in Lidster on the Western side of Orange. We harvested the fruit slightly earlier than we would have liked to as rain threatened very close to harvest time. The fruit had some nice botrytis through it and we hand-picked being sure to keep the good botrytis. The fruit was whole bunch pressed hard and slow to extract some phenolics and texture. The wine was fermented in stainless steel by indigenous yeasts and was stopped whilst there was still a small amount of residual sugar, at the point where the ideal balanced was reached. It was then aged on full lees without any stirring for 7 months prior to bottling without fining and with sterile filtration.
On the nose we see hints of citrus blossom and lemon meringue, white nectarine and green fruits like apple or feijoa. In the mouth, there’s a lovely herbaceousness that bring fennel to mind as well as those delicious green fruits again propped up by a subtle hint of residual sugar and some grippy phenols to keep things interesting all the way through the entire length of the wine. Hard to beat… A Riesling like this!
