Eco Vineyards

What is the National Eco Vineyards program?

Winegrape growers throughout Australia are being supported in their actions to enhance soil health, establish ground covers and increase functional biodiversity in their vineyards through the National EcoVineyards program.

Through EcoVineyards, wine growers have access to new region-specific resources, regular events, and insights from demonstration sites in participating wine regions. Strong regional collaboration has been important to help future proof fruit quality, production, and the resilience of Australian vineyards.

Tell us in a few sentences about your experience as a viticulturist, how did you arrive here?

We are a father and son team who are 2nd and 3rd generation viticulturists respectively. Mark’s parents- Sam’s grandparents started growing grapes in Southern Illinois in the 80s and that’s where Mark got the taste for it. After meeting Sandy and moving to Australia it was this connection to the wine industry that motivated Mark and Sandy to find a property in regional NSW, just outside of Bathurst to establish their own vineyard in 1997.

Sam came onboard full time in 2016 and since then the operation has expanded modestly to the point where Renzaglia Wines manages a total of 5 hectares of vineyard over 3 sites, much of which is new plantings.

    Vintage 2024

2024 was a phenomenal year for grapes in the Central Ranges of New South Wales……but it didn’t start out that way! We had virtually no water in the soil in early spring and had used up all of our available water including what little we had in our dam. Then, thankfully, the rains came in…

  • Lock down Vermouth

Vermouth as it seems, is really the genesis of the themes that I have discussed in the above pieces. For those that don’t know what Vermouth is. It’s an aromatized, fortified and often sweetened wine. Not too different to a gin, but much lower alcohol. Vermouth is a key constituent in many of the world’s…

    New release: Central Ranges

The foundations of Renzaglia Wines were laid in 1982, in the most unlikely of places, when winemakers Guy and Betty Renzaglia planted a small vineyard in the dry county of Alto Pass, Illinois, USA. Fifteen years later, their son Mark and his wife Sandy established their eponymous label in the Wambuul Valley, within the cool…
